THE HISTORY OF THE WHAYLAND COMPANY
The Whayland Company was originally established as Mayhew Whayland Construction Company in 1950 by Mayhew Whayland, Jr. He began as a builder of small to mid-sized residences in Salisbury, Maryland. Known for quality workmanship, the firm transitioned to constructing custom-built homes by the end of the decade, moving away from the bid market.
In the early 1960s, Whayland expanded into commercial and industrial construction, maintaining its high standards. By the 1970s and 1980s, the firm focused on public bid work and pre engineered buildings, embracing the design/build approach and construction management.
In 1988, Whayland became a subsidiary of the Knott Company, serving as its construction resource on the Eastern Shore. This partnership lasted until the Knott Company decided to sell Whayland in the early 1990s. Bob Wheatley acquired Whayland in 1993, emphasizing a design/build team approach and total project management.
In 2013, a succession plan brought Steve Hentschel into leadership, ensuring the continuation of Whayland’s legacy of customer service and value. Whayland emphasizes a hands-on approach, balancing quality and price, and encourages client participation in the design phase. The firm uses various contracting methods, including the popular Construction Management approach, which involves clients in the value engineering and buyout process to maximize value and cost savings.
Whayland builds with diverse construction types, including masonry, structural steel, wood, and metal, ensuring each project meets the client’s needs and is delivered on time and within budget.
